Grizzy Bears Foraging

The bears emerge from hibernation in April or early May, depending on the weather. We usually start tours about mid-May, to ensure there are plenty of bears out-and-about for you to see. When the bears emerge from their dens, they begin feeding on grass, roots, and other vegetation, and later foraging on the beach for whatever they can find under rocks and on the foreshore. In the summertime, when berries are ripe, that becomes another major item in their diet. From mid-August on, when the salmon start moving into the river, that becomes the main focus of grizzly bear feeding activity. They need to pack on lots of fat for the winter hibernation, and the salmon provide the perfect opportunity.
